SPECIALIZED

Lori Bowden has come full circle. The two-time and current Ironman World Champion is back with bike and equipment sponsor Specialized.  After a year hiatus in her relationship with Specialized to try out different bikes and experiment with positioning, Lori inked a new sponsorship agreement with Specialized for bikes, helmets, cycling shoes and other equipment. "I enjoyed the freedom to try out other bikes and geometries but, in the end, there is no better equipment for my racing and training needs," said Bowden. "I'm happy to be back with Specialized so that we can work together to get me back in my ideal race position on the best equipment available. I'm also excited about all the changes and innovations they have made with their cycling shoes, which are now my favorite ever."

Specialized founder and president, Mike Sinyard, was equally enthusiastic. "It's great having Lori back on the Specialized team", he said. "Lori's presence underscores out commitment both to our Designs for Women initiative and to the sport of triathlon. In addition to being an incredible athlete, she's always a pleasure to work with."

Lori will campaign this year on a new Specialized bike with 700c wheels and a triathlon-specific geometry (to be formally introduced later this summer), plus Designs for Women shoes, saddle, and other equipment. "Last year I was convinced that 26" wheels were the way to go for certain courses," said Bowden. "My thinking about wheel sizes has changed over the year. My 700c S-Works is light and aerodynamically clean -- it's perfect for most situations, even in small frame sizes." (Lori rides a 47cm frame). As for Kona, Bowden's only comment is "let's just say I'm working with Specialized's engineers on something "extra-Specialized" for this race."

InfinIT

Out in the lava fields nutrition is everything. Lori Bowden knows it – she’s won two Ironman World Championships. Luke Bell is a quick study – he was 5th in Kona last year at age 24. Both have signed primary sponsorship agreements with InfinIT Nutrition, a new company on the sports nutrition scene out of Cincinnati, Ohio.

InfinIT provides athletes of all stripes with a custom-blended sports drink alternative. InfinIT understands that no two athletes have the same nutritional needs and has developed a truly custom-blended drink supplement system for athletes ranging from weekend warriors to the leader in the lava fields.

InfinIT’s web site (www.infinitnutrition.com ) will provide a simple, easy platform for athletes to determine their nutritional needs for both racing and training and then create their own supplements based on their individual requirements and taste. “This is not an ‘our powder is better than your powder’, said Michael Folan, President of InfinIT Nutrition. “At InfinIT, our powder is your powder and we will make it especially for you based on your order. “

”Getting just the right drink mixture out on the race course has always been a problem” commented Lori Bowden. “Now I can get a drink mixed to my specification based on the distance, conditions and my individual tolerance.”

LORI SIGNS WITH ASICS

Two-time Ironman Triathlon World Champion, Lori Bowden, has signed anagreement to wear and endorse Asics footwear. For years Asics has been one of the most popular footwear brands for American triathletes. The relationship with Bowden and Asics America’s first major triathlete sponsorships. Going back to the early 1990’s Asics Europe has sponsored such top triathletes as Wolfgang Dittrich and Thomas Hellriegel.
“I haven’t had an affiliation with a footwear brand for last 5 years” said Bowden. “During this time I’ve had a chance to run in all the major brands and I can’t tell you how excited I was that this opportunity came up. Asics makes fantastic footwear.”
Bowden is the holder of Ironman Triathlon World Championship (Hawaii) Run Course record. Her 2:59:16 record set in 1999 is the only sub 3-hour marathon ever by woman on the Kona course. Bowden owns 4 of the 6 fastest marathons ever by a woman in Kona.

TRIATHLETE MAGAZINES FEMALE LONG COURSE TRIATHLETE OF THE YEAR

Lori has been names Triathlete Magazines Female Long Course Triathlete of the Year!
Virtually overlooked by the 2003 Kona pre race predictions; most gave her only a cursory mention due to her past performances in Kona - and I think to hedge their bets. Predictions may have put to much weight on Lori's "Un-Lori-Like"  second place performance in Frankfurt at Ironman Germany to the "on fire" Nina Kraft in her home country.
In Lori's race plan for 2003 it called for  her taking a pass on an early season Ironman race and her annual pilgrimage to the Ironman Canada to see if it would leave her fresher physically and mentally for Kona.  At a banquet in February Lori also disclosed  that she would be pulling out her old Cheetha bike just for Kona... she was pulling out all the stops for another shot at "The Show"!  Lori wanted to know for herself - if all the stars were lined up right; if all her ducks were in a row - could she grab another World Championship. The rest is history... just as her record in Hawaii. Lori's performance in Hawaii for the past seven (7) years (1997 - 2003) has resulted in two (2) World Championships, four (4) runner up spots and one (1) third place showing. During this same period Ms. Consistency has competed in nineteen (19) Ironman races; winning twelve (12), placing second five (5) times and rounds it out with a pair third places!
Congrats to the swift footed Canadian Ironman Champion on this award.

KONA RACE REPORT

Okay, so here it is...finally. My Kona race report. I suppose I should have done this a week or so when things were still fresh in my mind! I actually haven't been thinking about the race too much since I got home, as I've been so busy hanging out with friends, having coffee, movies, treats and visits to the Pub, and starting to pack on the pounds! Also, I've been able to visit a few of the local public school cross country running races, and visit a few schools. That's been fun - always inspiring to see the excitement in the kids faces.

LORI - IRONMAN WORLD CHAMPION TIME TWO

Lori "went like a bugger" today in the Hawaii Ironman World Championships. Putting together a stellar performance in all three legs of the race Lori captured her second World Championship title! Starting the run some four plus minutes down Lori ran down the race leaders by mile 10. It took a 3:02 marathon to overtake four time winner defending champion Natasha Badmann bike leader Nina Kraft. She went on to finish over six minutes faster than the Natasha Badmann who held onto second.
Not only was Lori fast today she looked awesome. Sporting a new Duofold race suit, matching Gyro helmet... throw in a totally "geeked out" Cheetha bike, and the "cool factor" was off the scale! Awesome job Lori! We will have more tomorrow.
